However, not all households have a TV or other desired screen with an HDMI input. Old TVs and other devices with a SCART interface are still in use. Therefore, the question arises: Can I make my HDMI device compatible to, for example, use an old TV?

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is an interface that enables fully digital transmission of audio and video to a screen. This means that both audio and video data must be in digital form so that an HDMI cable can recognize the data and forward it to other devices.

SCART (Syndicat au Constructeurs d'Appareils) is an older interface that was often used in TVs and VCRs. The great advantage of the SCART interface was that it supported various analog transmission paths, such as composite video, S-video, or RGB. However, SCART cannot handle digital transmission methods. In contrast to the HDMI interface, only analog signals are transmitted here, for example from the VCR to the TV. Both signals – audio and video – must therefore be in analog form.

For the SCART input on an older screen to be able to process the digital signals from a newer device with an HDMI output, these must first be converted to analog signals. For this, you need a so-called HDMI to SCART converter. Due to the incompatibility between analog and digital transmission, a \"mechanical\" adapter cable is not enough to transmit video from HDMI to SCART; a device that converts the signals is required. (With a regular cable from HDMI to SCART, either the quality loss would be significant or the transmission would not work at all.)
